Unit Lost: Command & Conquer cancelled.

Command & Conquer: progressively prettier mushroom clouds
   since 1995

Command & Conquer's free to play reboot has been cancelled and Victory Studios, and the team assembled specifically to create and maintain it, have been given their marching orders. The official press release on the series' website states that Victory Studios had listened to player feedback and come to the conclusion that they were "not making the game that [fans] wanted to play". I've waxed lyrical about my anticipation for the new Command & Conquer a number of times, so as you can imagine, I'm a little disappointed the project has been abandoned.

All is not lost, however, as the press release quoted above also states that a number of options are being explored in terms of keeping the Godfather of RTS games' embers burning. This aborted micro-transaction fueled offering originally started life as a more traditional sequel to 2003's Generals, so a move to salvage the work that's already been completed and package it as was originally intended wouldn't surprise me. That said, I fear it'll be a long time before EA dispels the black clouds of uncertainty that now surround the series' future.
